Peoples Of Kenya
Kenya is a country made up of different cultures which emanate from the 42 different tribes. Kenya comprises of 4 major ethnic groups; Bantu, Cushitic, Nilotic and Nilo-Cushitic. During their migration, different ethnic groups settled in different Geographical areas in the country. Apart from Nairobi which is a Cosmopolitan society.
The Bantu- consist of the majority of the community in Kenya, Kikuyu, Luhya, Mijikenda, Taita, Meru, Kamba and other smaller tribes. They are found in the central region of the country as well as the coast region. The Giriama tribe, (a sub-section of the Mijikenda) is popular for its close association spiritually with the forest and animals. The Kamba; however is a different kettle of fish. They are great hunters using poisoned arrows. They are also reputable for their great wood carving skill evidenced the handicrafts found in most curio shops found world wide.
The Cushitic- consist if the Somali, Rendille and Galla community. They are mainly found in the North-East areas around Wajir and Marsabit. The Rendille are numerically less and occupy themselves with livestock herding.
The Nilotic group- comprises of the Turkana and the Luos. The Luo are a collection of tribes and are found near the Lake Victoria regions. They are outstanding in their adapted profession of fishing as an economic activity. Originally they were pastoralists. The Turkana on the other hand are pastoralists known for their enduring nature to drive livestock into rough terrains and harsh climatic conditions.
The Nilo- Cushitic- comprise of the Pokot, Samburu, Kalenjin and the Maasai. The Kalenjin are further divided into subdivisions of the Nandi and Kipsigis. The Maasai are highly respected for their legendary courage in spearing lion to defend their cattle. Their attribute a lot of wealth to the number of cattle one owns. The Maasai are the best known pastoralist group in Kenya.
